i think that sensible guys in the congress and the bjp should form a national govt-as has been done in germany
under angela merkel.

the leaders of the third front are mostly crooks and carpet baggers. mayawati, mulayam singh, lalloo, and paswan are truly the worst-truly the lower class.
uneducated, dishonest, and not fit to sit on the high table.

Yes-without a momemt's hesitation. I would prefer BJP
over the left front since it's a no brainer. Under the left-Congress rule, I firmly believe Hindus will become a minority within a few decades. That's the main and perhaps the ONLY reason why I prefer BJP over the let-Congress. In fact, I would prefer some one stronger than a Modi (not Advani) to be the next PM of India

Not only over third front, but very much over the UPA as well, dreading to think that it would be led by a highly worthless fellow like Rahul Gandhi someday.

If Advani becomes PM, then the real power broker will be Modi, a friend of the 'sahookars', the blood suckers of the society.

India is now run by pro-Islamic parties for vote banks and profits (corruption). BJP is certainly not free of corruption nor I consider Advani the dynamic leader that India is in need of-But at least it might give comfort and confidence among Hindus Indias not yet an Islamic state

Certainly, the left parties and some constituent parties of the 3rd front like JD(S),JD(U),BSP etc. has their own national outlook and ideology, which may not bid well for the India shining and India blazing brigade, but at least will care a lot more for the poor and marginalized citizens of India. Hence, say no to both UPA and NDA, both bourgeoise capitalist party.

I dispute the thesis of Vir Sanghvi that one needs a vision to govern. I'd argue that the vision (such as it is) - of freer markets, less governmental intrusion in business, a strong national defense, etc. - are all accepted and a part of the nation's collective understanding (even for the CPI(M) - witness Singur).

What we need is not more vision, but competent execution. In most cases, this means the willingness to put the best civil servants in the seniormost positions and let them get on with running the country. At this point in time, Modi is the only one who has any history of delivering competent and non-corrupt governance. Since he is unacceptable as Prime Minister, the next choice would have to be Laloo Yadav, who has some claim to having run the Railways efficiently. He too is unlikely. Therefore, you now need someone who has run a large state, which points to one of Mayawati, Patnaik or Naidu. As the one likely to command the most MPs, I think Mayawati will get the nod.

I am betting that once it is obvious she's the favorite, there will be a fight between the BJP and the Congress to be the first to offer the opportunity for a coalition, as both parties will want to be associated with India's first Dalit PM. The Congress will win that race, and after about two years of being subjected to her insults, will eventually pull the plug on her, triggering elections in 2011 again.

I never understood people like veer Sanghavi
(1) they love Rajeev gandhi a person who slept while sikh were butchered in Delhi but he can;t stand Modi despite Modi being awake and actually doing sthg to check riots as opposed to Rajeev gandhi
(2) They love Sonia Maino despite the fact that she pulls strings and makes sure her jeejaji qutrochi's bank account got defreezed and when media asks they first feign ignorancer and then CBI says they got order from govt to do this. Hwosoever corrupt MAywati may be but she is better than these thugs who funnell money outside India to their relatives.
(3) When Sonia Mata a mere matrivulate with zero sense of India can be PM candidate then Maywati who is graduate and has come to thsi level against bigger challenge certainly has betetr credentials
(4) And yes the biggest reason behind diapproval of Maywati is the fact that she talks in rustic tone and these convent educated Macalay-putras can;t stand that

Anyway I will take rather third front ahead of Congress obviously first choice is NDA

Congress and to some extent even BJP has conceded political space to crooks of regional parties.. now question one needs to ask is why has that happened.. Because people can;t be wrong if they feelthye have bene wronged by these vacuuous-garibi-hatao mantra being chanted for 60 years then they will go for alternative. Those who lilve in kushy air-conditioned homes in Delhi can;t appreciate this. But fact is if Dallit s feel cheated by congress despite reposing faith in them for 50 years then they have every right to elect someone else.. These Macalya-putras like veer Sanghavi can;t appreciate this since in their world India is rich and prosperous and congresis have delivered it..

it's time for change and if that means Maywati then so be it.

She anyway is much smarter than the dumbo who somehow passed tenth standard names Sonia Gandhi

Mr. Vir Sanghvi came out with an excellent piece as always. His advise to the BJP and Congress to eschew support for any 3rd/4th/5th front in advance ought to be heeded by them, if not for the country sake, then for their own long term interests. In a similar vein, much as I despise the Congress and its policies, I would any day take a Manmohan Singh or even Rahul Gandhi as PM over a Maya Bahenji or H.D Devegowda.

However, there are a lot of political analysts who say that because India is intrinsically a coalition of various linguistic, racial and religious communities, not all of which see eye to eye, so we are and we should have a coalition government. But a ubiquitous multi party set up with no one in real charge would be a recipe for disaster and in these unsure times could shoot India’s nascent economic recovery in the foot. So I was wondering about his thoughts on a European Union kind of model for India where each country (in our case state) has sufficient freedom to do their thing yet are bonded together. Thus those states which follow better practices, economic and political, would reap the benefits of their policies and not get bogged down by the incompetent and lazy ones. This would also give people, whose voices don’t count for much in our electoral system, a voice at least in their states.

I think Aadwani should lead the country for the simple fact that no leader across parties come any where close to his stature. At least he is offering an alterntive vision about security and developmnt. He is not seeking primeministership simply because he can come with sufficient number of MPs after election.

In the last year, my opinion has changed from being pro-BJP to pro-Congress. The third front should never be given any space. But I don't entirely agree that regional parties don't have a vision for the country. It may be partly true in the case of a Deve Gowda or a Mayawati. But a Jayalalitha, for example, can be a much better Prime Minister than Sonia Gandhi or her proxies. So, that matter is subjective.

I used to hate the congress for its pro-Islamic anti-Hindu stance. But I fear that under BJP, Hindus lose fundamental rights and it will lead to the rise of Hindu Taliban as in the case of Karnataka. This is a far greater danger than the Congress. The Congress after all, under a Roman Catholic will keep checks on the rise of Islamic terrorism (atleast, I hope so and am willing to take that risk).

Both parties are corrupt and both have "leaders" of questionable background. But the greater danger here is that of India losing its liberal and secular character and becoming an ultra orthodox Hindu Talibanistic nation. The greater good is definitely a free, tolerant, liberal nad plural India.

Ashwin from Jersey City says that he is anti-BJP because of the rise of Hindu Taliban, which was evident to him from the Ram Sene attack on a pub. First off, this buffoon does not know that Ram Sene is in no way affiliated to the BJP - heck, they fought elections against each other. Secondly, his argument that the emerging church will keep the spread of Islam in check is just plain stupid and devoid of any relevance. The church sees India as a breeding ground for evangelicals who can then donate their entire life savings to the Vatican. And, this buffoon should count one historical example where Islam and Christianity survived in the same country with checks and balances and without conflicts. There goes his second argument down the toilet. Finally, the very fact that he changed from being Pro-BJP to Pro-Congress, that too in the past ONE YEAR, speaks volumes about his rudimentary analytical skills and complete lack of an understanding of the sufferings of people living in India. You Fool!
