The BJP had been counting to have the backing of the majority of the 21 seats from Orissa with the help of Navin Patnaik's BJD. But with Navin Patnaik's stunning announcement last night, the BJP's campaign has received a severe setback.

It is not just a loss of the majority of these seats that would hit the party, but also its psychological impact on the other allies -- such as the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and SAD in Punjab -- with whom BJP's seat-sharing talks are already in heavy water.

Leaving other calculations aside, even the following analyses by Arun Nehru, published in yesterday's Deccan Chronicle, which was clearly written before the jolt from Orissa, tells its own story.

While the seat-sharing and alliance troubles are haunting the UPA and the so-called Third Front as well, at the moment, clearly, it's a big set-back for the BJP -- some say a setback big enough to have knocked the party out of the Lok Sabha race already.

Incidentally, Mumbai-based DNA has done its own poll-forecast today. According to this estimate, the Congress and BJP would get 3 seats each in Orissa whereas BJD would walk away with 15. Its over all predictions are:

UPA: 202
NDA: 174 &
Others:167

It may be useful to remind ourselves that just a few days back, the Times of India had estimated the following seats for the 2009 LS polls:

UPA: 206
NDA: 195
Third Front: 82 &
Others: 65

For Orissa, the TOI estimates gave 4 to Congress, 3 to BJP and 14 to BJD. So basically, as of now, both DNA and TOI estimates would show the BJP suffering a setback of at least 14-15 seats.

Going by the predictions of the three surveys(Deccan chronicle, DNA & TOI),we can presume that UPA has a
definite edge over BJP and others.taking into account the recent developments and future changes, we can conclude that majority of the voters fed up with the "instable"coalitions are sure to back Congress to the hilt.

90 days to go is a long period and situations will arise where country will look for a strong and patriotic leader and not a cronie like Manmohan Singh or an imbecile like Rahul Gandhi. That will be Advani.Sharad Pawar will be truly 'Nationalistic' this time and will not support this 'phirangi'family.Don't be surprised if even Mayawathi would support Advani out of respect for his age and capability.People like Deve Gowda are there just to give comic relief.

I agree ... though given the "untouchability" factor of the BJP, they were never a serious contender to start with unless they could cross 200 on their own steam (which is basically impossible as well, given their relegation to 3rd place in UP behind the BSP and SP).

Short-term prediction: It's most likely a Third Front government with Mayawati as PM and the Congress's outside support; and elections again by 2011.

Long-shot prediction: UPA wins again in 2011, and P. Chidambaram is PM, with Rahul Gandhi as Minister for Something (Youth? Sport?), getting ready to be positioned as PM candidate in 2016. In 2016, he will be 45, sufficiently "experienced," and may even have a few grey hairs to boot. Long live the Dynasty!
