Paul Beckett, the WSJ's bureau chief in New Delhi:

Ajay Goyal, an independent candidate contesting for a Lok Sabha seat in Chandigarh ...[has] been approached by about 10 people – some brokers and public relations managers acting on behalf of newspaper owners, some reporters and editors – with the message that he'll only get written about in the news pages for a fee. We're not talking advertising; we're talking news.

...The best-known English-language dailies typically don't do it so blatantly, candidates and others involved in the elections say. Rather, those papers are more likely to hue closely to one major party or the other, making it tough for candidates who don't fit the papers' view of the world to be heard. But in the Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati media, to name a few, the practice is widespread, candidates say.

People like Barkha Dutt and Rajdeep Sardesai are shamelessly pro-Congress and anti-BJP.A minor incident of an attack on a pub in Mangalore is projected by them as a major incident, only because Karnataka has a BJP government.Still repulsive is the Kandhamal reporting without ever mentioning the cold blooded murder of Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati.

English language news channels and media are doing more harm to the country than the politicians. Channels like NDTV show only snobs coming for debtates and discussions. Actresses who change more husbands than dresses, women who do not care for our culture are asked for opinions on many issues. You cannot see a middle class intelligent man or woman in many debates. People who lack knowledge or others who play second fiddle to ruling party dominate in discussions.

Possible, even probable..but the Mumbai media with or without inducements managed to pull a veil over the best new candidate to emerge in these elections..Mahesh Jethmalani only because he was fro the BJP.... Absurd but I think the national press is anti-national and besides is basking in the glow of advertisements and other freebies from the Indian National Congress.

"The best-known English-language dailies " are funded by foreign agents. They have their own agenda beyond national politics. The writers in it are just "coolies"
