Mythologist Dr Devdutt Pattanaik interviews Wendy Doniger in the Mid Day and provides the full interview on his website

In one of the questions, I had suggested that she enjoys intellectual heckling. It is an opinion I have held for long. I realise after reading her answer that it could be just a case of a different sensibilities....

When I read your books, I feel you enjoy heckling people. Your choice of words can be rather stark. I can almost feel you chuckle at the orthodox getting their knickers in a twist. Am I imagining this?

Yes, I think you are indeed imagining this, but apparently you are not the only one. Perhaps if you gave me an example of something that you regard as heckling or stark I could see where the misinterpretation has come in. My sense of humor, which is a New York Jewish sense of humor, sometimes is mistaken for flippancy. But I never ever write with the intention of making anyone angry. The only people I poke fun at in The Hindus are the scholars who generated such outlandish ideas about the Indus Valley on the basis of absolutely no evidence. I never ever poke fun at any Hindus. I sometimes see Hindu texts as themselves as funny, or as poking fun at other people, and I enjoy those texts and cite them. I certainly do not always agree with what the texts say. But I do not heckle them.

PROMETHEUS, KOLKATA >> Brahmins also can be unorthodox and open-minded. ..will become worthless ashes very soon .. do not generalize >>

<< I generally do not reply to posters using aliases, but to the Prometheus the Zeus; I would only say that though there may be few good souls amongst the Brahmins, like a lotus on the filthy lake, but they should denounce the corrupt practices of Brahmins over the centuries and excommunicate themselve. Otherwise, I am afraid, they will also be bracketed with the majority of their class, as bunch of liars, frauds, cheats, rapists, bloody vultures..f@ck!n b#st@&ds #*&^

Sorry, it should be here...

SHYAMAL BARUA>>>>traditional Hindus(i.e. Brahmins in real sense)

Brahmins also can be unorthodox and open-minded.Your mind has just become shriveled losing the life-fight with Brahmins, I think. Put off the smoldering fire of your heart as quick as possible or it will become worthless ashes very soon. Do not generalize.

I think it's necessary to take the views or opinions of a learned non Hindu(i.e. non Brahmin)seriously, as they are capable of thinking out of the box, where as the traditional Hindus(i.e. Brahmins in real sense)tend to be handicapped by their age old prejudices and tunnel view. Remember the ruckus created by orthodox Hindus, from London to Mathura, in 1998, that Ganesh idols are sucking up milk from the container, when besides the political leaders, DR's., Engineers, Sceintists, even the rationalist like CEC Mr. T.N. Seshan ran to the nearest temple in his lungi!!! No wonder, the traveller historian Ibn Batuta while travelling India in 12 th century A.D., was surprised to see how mere one percent of high caste Brahmins are taking the 99% of the population for a ride in the name of religion and sacred texts. Huh..the same tradition continues till today..

I want to convey only a one simple thing that when you read any holy book like bible or quran or geeta dont manuplate the meaning of the text according to your wish just try to be fair with those teachings, you should try to calculate the intension behind those teachings because it is the intension of any such holy books for the welfare of mankind which signifies the cause of its creation and don't be jealous with other religion because we all are same our God is same but having different names.......there i found you were talking about shri ram!!....I want you to grew your cult of understanding and try to understand the intension behind the decission of shri ram......you will understand it on your own?......You know there are many holy books in hinduism and it takes whole life by any hindu in going through and understanding these holy books......It is not as simple as it seems to be....you cannot understand any religion by keeping hatred in your heart so improve that habit......and try to love everything you read .

In the same vehement as you have advised that the Book be published in all Indian languages will you ask your Muslim brothers to atleast read Tasleema Nasreen's Lajja and satanic verses by Salman Rushdie. There is a basic difference here. While both the said writers belong to Muslim community wheb Wendy is a Jew and not a Hindu.
The Muslims have lot to learn to save their future as to why the community cannot be saved from Jihadism. Can they afford to drift like this when brothers are killing brothers on a daily basis.I dont think to correct these there is need of any book to be refered.

And dont you think Bengali Babus like you in whose blood the communism flows freely must also read Karl Marx and understand what he stood for before sympathising with the mercenary and extortionists like your Maoist and Naxalite brothers.
Parivar people dont think that just because your aunt Wendy is a Sanskrit scholar she has no jurisdiction or an authority to speak for Hinduism. These are all Christian missionary conspiracies and Wendy is only a sympathiser wearing a mask of liberals.

The eternally inferiority complex ridden Hindus will always think anything written by a westerner has to be great. Now,we have this exploding number of convent educated Hindus who further stoke this complex. You can write anything on Hindus and Hinduism in India, but be ever circumspect on writing on Christanity or Islam.

To be honest, she does not seem hostile to Hinduism.

Her big fault is refusing to admit the Abrahamic religions are also mythological.

In this interview Wendy Doniger comes across as being much more sympathetic to Hinduism and much more scholarly and insightful than what many of her critics portray her to be.

Madam the day you leanr the basics of Geeta we will talk. Anyone who thinks messgae of geeta is that soul is eternal so it doesn;t matetr even fi you kill you cousins has to be one fo the most flimsiest reader of geeta..

Let me educate you a little. ""Message of geeta is that there is no room to dither from dharma even if on the side of adharma there is array of your very near and dear ones." Dharma wins personal relationship on side of adharma must not interfere with deeds of dharma
