So Vande Mataram is once again in the news, with one of the 25 resolutions passed by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind at its 30th general session in the presence of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, affirming that

"The [2006] fatwa of Darul Uloom (opposing recitation of Vande Mataram) is correct."

Here's a link to the full FAQ on the 2006 controversy, along with a link to the Congress Working Committee, in Calcutta on October 26, 1937, under the presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru which provides a historical perspective.

And here's the full coverage from the Outlook Archives

While, the spirit of patriotism and love for motherland cannot be bound by a couple of stanzas or a song, the immense contribution of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhaya, whose song VANDE MATARAM towards liberating the servile Indians from the clutches of the COLONIAL rule cannot be overlooked. The only principle practiced by ISLAMISM worldwide is FANATICISM, which cannot be accepted in pluralistic society as a result they deprived of their power to appreciate the spirit and sentiments of other religion.

Pasha, its better u keep your views to yourself. Its not the BJP but the clerics who have created the whole dam thing.By asking Navin what you did , goes, its disgusting and reprehensible. Now that u have had your say,I need to ask you jerk ,why are your clan out here who breed like flies asked to change there faith or were they prevented from following it.Its despicable that after all the facts before the world u have the adorcity to make such parallels.People like u and those skull caps have done nothing to enlighten nor empower the illiterate clan, you guys are bent on making issues were none exsists. Why is that these clerics havent issued fatwas against those Muslims who have repeatedly failed the state and the religion. If at all u had any sense of rationale thinking you would never have made such a comparison.Nobody out here is asking people to convert but sing a song which is filled with patriotic fervour.Anyway i apologise to every Indian hurt by this insane blokes take.

It is not the Muslims, it is the BJP which wants to create issues out of nothing.
About a year or two ago, they made the people perform surya puja and sraswati puja in Madhya Pradesh.
Did any one ask you to become Muslim or behave like a Muslim in Muscat. ?

If welfare of Muslims and upholding the tenets of Islam is the prime concern of Ulama-e-Hind, then they should visit the Sultanate of Oman, a Islamic country, two thousand kilometers west of India and see for themselves the truthfulness of Islam. The country is an apt example of what Islam stands for. That means means clean living, being respectful to one and all, tolerant to other religions and diversity. One will be amazed at the freedom given to non-Muslims in their matters. But when i see the fatwas issued every now and then by the Indian Muslims clergy, I rue at their shortsightedness and complete ineptness at understanding Islam. The need of the hour for the Indian Muslims is not an advisory on whether to Sing Vande Maateram but to Shine in their respective fields and bring glory to themselves, the country they live in and ultimately to their religion.

What is the essence of this poem?
To show love , affection and devotion or worshipping the subcontinent of India?

If it is love and effection , Mulims love their parent , even if they are not Muslims.

But when it comes to worship, the concept of worship in Islam is differnt from other cults and religions.Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable God, who has neither son nor partner. No one shares His divinity, or His attributes. In Islam there is no concept of incarnation, patron saint, presiding deity, guardian spirit ,Holy spirit or Holy Mother. No one has the right to be invoked, supplicated, prayed to, or shown any act of worship, but God alone.

He not only created us, but gave us a set of principles to guide us in the right path.

There is an image problem for Islam all over the world after the September 11 terrorist attack on America and similar attacks at various parts of the world from time to time. Instead of issuing fatwas and Jihad’s of various kinds for frivolous reasons, mullahs and Imams are duty bound to redeem Islam as a religion that abhors violence and adhere to friendship and fellowship of all human beings. The likes of Osama Bin Laden has high jacked the Islam’s good teachings and exhorting violence quoting from the Koran. No religion would promote violence of any kind.

First of all i dont know what the meaning of the verses on which the fatwa has been passed. But i can tell onething that PC would have been better off by keeping himself off the conference.By making a token presence at the meet ,PC has made himself a subject of appeasement. To deny that the said fatwa was passed in his absence makes his very visit murky. As for the question bieng raised on the loyalty of the muslims go the rather needless controversy created by the clerics shows there poor IQ and the ill will such fatwas generate is a testimony to there state of mind. Why dont these clerics pass a fatwa against Ahmed who did not spare Haj to enrich himself.God knows were these guys are leading the community. Will be happy if my fellow bloggers tanslate the verse which has been objected to by these clerics.Please.

Issuing Fatwa against Vande Mataram is only the begining. There will be many more such audacious Fatwas, which they will issue with impunity. All this is a by-product of Sonia-Rahul formula of appease the Muslims and take the Hindus for granted. You protest this type of Fatwas, the media will howl you are communal.

There are only two reasons for the RSS to go after it.One is that it is sung after Muslims get killed in the Novel. The second is that it was written by a brhamin who is virulently anti Muslim.RSS has long been able to establish the killing of Muslims synonymous to Nationalism. This song only reinforces that.Everything the RSS wanted is happening albeit slowly. One of them was to make sanskrit the national language and they have done it through Hindi.Today the Hindi is nothing but sanskrit.Brhamins were able to rule India for more than 3000 years because they have the foresight and the cunningness that none of the Indians have. This need to be stopped at some point and I am happy about this fatwa. But the whole truth should have been revealed.

Mr. Safiudding you are quite mistaken about Golwalkar's A Bunch of Thoughts.
He does not preach hatred against any community. I hope you will read the book.
He did, however, say that every Indian should be loyal to the Motherland.

And the Maulvis are mistaken in thinking that greeting the Motherland (Vande Mataram) is a religious call.

Please also listen to the beautiful rendition of the song by Rabindranath.

By the way, although it is called India's national song, it is not compulsory to sing it.

I am a Muslim and I gladly sing Vande Mataram. I would not sing it if I was required to sing it. I would however sing it even louder if I was forbidden to sing it.

Muslims should not follow any fatwas from the Jamiat. If they think that the words Vande Mataram mean "I worship Mother India", and they believe that they cannot worship anyone but God, they do not have to sing it. If they believe, as I do, that the words Vande Mataram mean "I salute Mother India", they should have no problem singing it.

Those who say that singing it is compulsory are as wrong as the Jamiat's ulamas who say that singing it is forbidden.

Safiuddin, if you read the FAQs and the links posted in this blog, you'd find that "the song was written independently of, and long before, the novel, and was subsequently incorporated in it".

Surely, even if someone puts "Jana Gana Mana" in a blatantly communal novel, you would not go around protesting the National Anthem, would you?

I understand the pain, though, and am entirely in agreement with those who say that the song should not be compulsory. Clearly anyone who says that singing the song is a test of patriotism is just being stupid or communal. What I don't understand, though, is why go around passing fatwas and bringing these wedge issues into limelight? Likewise, why get all worked up and get one's knickers in a twist if a fatwa is indeed passed. Surely, it is not stopping that foaming at the mouth crowd from singing the song.

Best is to ignore such silly notions and do what you want to do. And don't do what you don't want to do.

This song is taken from the novel 'Anand Math' and this book must be right up there with Golwalkar's book (Bunch of Thoughts?) for the venom it spews at the Muslim community:the history of the kings, the religion of Islam and the entire community in general. If a Muslim gets himself acquainted with this history of the book then (s)he doesnt even need fatwas from the moulvis to not only shun this song but actually abhor it.This song is a dagger in the hearts of Indian Muslims who fondly believe that they had contributed and continue to contribute to the fabric of India.
