From the morning a consensus on the census. Officials from the BMC, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, troop into Prateeksha to detail in on information, that shall for the first time in India develop for every citizen the UID - a unique identity card. All kinds of information is sought name, place, age, dependents, place of birth, house, residence years and on …. I wait for them to come to the crucial controversial one … caste. They don’t. Wary of the sensitivity that this has raised recently by politicians, they keep away from it. They reason that they would wait for some government decision on this. I tell them irrespective of what the system decides, my answer is ready - caste, Indian. My Father never believed in caste and neither do any of us. He married a Sikh, I married a Bengali, my brother a Sindhi, my daughter a Punjabi, my son a Mangalorean … in his autobiography he had expressed that future generations of his family should marry into different parts of the country. So far that tradition has been kept alive !!

When Gandhi was thrown out of the train, he realized he was not as much of an upper caste he thought. Rest is history. So, it is with most Brownies who have settled abroad. They struggle against snide racism of americans ("do they still ride elephants to work in india?") only to turn around give it by the fistfuls back to their countrymen and women. Whatsinaname, From when did Sikh, Bengali, Punjabi became castes? On the other hand, if we honestly dig up, all the Caste milieu of Mr. Bachchan is decidedly upper caste; but stating that would be inconvenient given his open protestations that he does not believe in caste. I read somewhere Meira Kumar (Speaker of Lok Sabha, Daughter of Jagjivan Ram I think) proposed 10000 Rs govt. aid for mixed-caste marriages. Has she ever looked at the Dowry figures for the IAS officers? Just goes to show you, even the lower caste woman like Meira can loose touch with reality. 10000 Rs. won't buy a sandwich at 5 star hotel in Delhi where she lives. What you pasted above is what I said about a hypothetical context of a discussion on a justified dalit upliftment, in which if he were to say that there is no such as a dalit with an implication there is no need to discuss the issue as there is no such a thing as dalit, then it is insensitive.
