Arundhati Roy speaks to the BBC's Sanjay Majumder:

Q: What was your reaction when you first heard about the accusations against Tarun Tejpal, as someone who knows him and is familiar with Tehelka?

A: Heartbreak. I think all of us are already braced for what we know is going to be mass hysteria in the media in which everybody is just not given time or place to think.

The fact is that what has been alleged against him is a pretty serious crime and you do have to admire the fact that a young colleague did have the courage to stand up and say what happened to her which isn't normally the case.

Yet, because of what happened in the [Delhi] gang rape last December, there is a lynch mob that is howling in a maximalist way. I think what we miss is a real addressing of the problem. On the one hand we are talking about sexual harassment, molestation and rape being a phenomenon which very many women go through. Is this media hysteria going to address the problem?

Gujarat instances are odd and hope that never repeat again. But the great menace our country faces is economic and physical war waged by PAK based terrorists group. That will continue unless we put a strong resistance. Many politicians are accepting Jihadi funds and formulating soft policies on terrorism, for the same reasons they are framing minority appeasement policies including special courts for terrorists, special pensions/grants etc.

But Modi is still guilty of inventing history despite apologizing for mistakenly saying Mukherjee instead of Varma.

On going through the newspaper article again, Saeed Naqvi is probably referring to rapes which allegedly took place during the riots, and not in the refugee camps.

I apologise, and take back what I said.

"Muzaffarnagar ....... where Muslim victims from recent communal violence were preparing for a bitter winter in makeshift camps. Among the refugees were scores of women, raped in front of their parents and children and who are still waiting for the wheels of justice to move at all."

Where Saeed Naqvi got this information about "scores of women" being "raped in front of their parents and children" in the refugee camp he doesn't say in his Deccan Herald article. I googled, and the information available on the net is that one woman from the refugee camp who went out of the camp was raped by two persons. They were caught and thrashed by the neighbours and handed over to the police.

The impression given by Saeed Naqvi is that women in the camp were systematically raped by organised gangs, and that the administration has done nothing. He being a writer of some standing and credibility, people will take his assertions as being the truth.

Unless he substantiates this specific charge, he is being irresponsible and guilty of fanning communal passion through rumours.
