I was just going to add a short-take to the many posts on this subject in the blog, but it does seem like a special occasion to merit a post by itself. To our old listing of some of the best resources for Hindustani classical music, viz.
we can now add Vikram Sampath's "proposed Archive of Indian Music that would act as a repository for all kinds of vintage recordings of India--Hindustani and Carnatic music, folk, theatre, early cinema and voices of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Tagore etc and also of common Indians. These are largely 78 RPM shellacs that have been digitized and restored..."
Set up as a private not-for-profit trust, the AOIM has been formed with the main objectives of:
- To digitize and restore records and create a database of high quality and high fidelity recordings
- To preserve these vintage recordings and make them available for listening to students, scholars, researchers, musicians and interested public
- To enrich these recordings by sourcing additional information about them including biographical details of the artistes, photographs, gramophone record sleeve images and other materials of historical significance that document the era of the record
The first phase of the project is over and a pilot website is now up and running here, already featuring about 180 artists of yore and close to 600 clips. The entire listing of artists is available here.

Swaang Songs, which describes itself as "a Bombay based cultural group, whose members include actors, writers, music directors, musicians and producers all in the grips of the market driven Bombay film industry, but whose hearts continue to pull towards progressive politics!" put out this song written by Ravinder Randhawa in memory of the unknown citizen and as "a token of protest against the increasing violence against women in India"

Very old mail that used to do the rounds years back, but had us chuckling again today when we received it in, well, email
If you're new to Blues music, or you like it but never really understood the whys and wherefores, here are some very fundamental rules:
1. Most Blues begin with: "Woke up this morning..."
2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues, unless you stick something nasty in the next line like, "I got a good woman, with the meanest face in town."
3. The Blues is simple. After you get the first line right, repeat it. Then, find something that rhymes -- sort of:
Got a good woman with the meanest face in town.
Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town.
Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher and she weigh 500 pound.

A few months back I stumbled upon a Wikipedia article about Ustad Fateh Ali Khan—the patriarch of the Patiala Gharana of the Indo-Pakistani (Hindustani) classical music. After mentioning ‘Fateh Ali Khan does not sing anymore because of bad health’, the entry notes that ‘after Fateh Ali Khan, there is no notable classical music singer left in Pakistan’. A related Wiki article states that Ustad Fateh Ali Khan’s younger brother ‘Ustad Hamid Ali Khan is considered by many to be the last of the great Patiala legends’.
The Wikipedia is factually wrong of course but reading the above was extremely disconcerting—till I walked into a concert in Florida few days ago. The band performing there goes by the name Raga Boyz and comprises of Ustad Hamid Ali Khan’s three sons Nayab Ali Khan, Wali Hamid Ali Khan and Inam Ali Khan and performs fusion music, blending the aesthetics of the traditional Khayal singing with the western beats. Listening to the brothers Nayab, Wali and Inam it was simply impossible to miss the signature voice of the Patiala Gharana—an enthralling blend of sensuous and sweet—coming from all three pairs of vocal cords. The Raga Boyz displayed a range of voice that is the sine qua non of the Patiala tradition with control that is simply outstanding for their young years. It is clear that the legend Ustad Hamid Ali Khan has passed the stylistic baton of the Patiala music—as well as his unassuming manner—to his sons.

For a long time now, Radio Pakistan has been putting out treasure troves from its archives on Youtube. It is heartening, therefore, to see the I&B ministry follow suit finally. The Films Division has long had a functioning, albeit klutzy, website where these archival recordings were already available, but putting them on Youtube would certainly make them accessible to a larger number of people. In the typical sarkari way, though, the recordings seem to be just dumped without any context or theme, making browsing through the uploaded material a chore. At least separate playlists for special archival material of classical music, documentaries and notable historical speeches etc would be a good idea, otherwise, as the uploads of regular, news-related programmes increase, browsing and trawling through a lot of such material would make it tedious to find recordings of interest and relevance. In any case, here is some of what caught my eye:

Laal sings for Malala, a Habib Jalib poem:
Darte hain banduukon waale ek nehatti larRkii se
phaele haiN himmat ke ujaale ek nehattii laRkii se
Dare huuey haiN mare huuey haiN larziidaa larziidaa haiN
Mullaa, taajir, general jiyalae, ek nehathii laRkii se
“Aazadii ki baat naa kar, logon say na mil”, yeh kehte hain
baehiss, zalim, dil kay kaale, ek nehatti laRkii se
The gunmen are frightened of an unarmed girl
The light of bravery is spread because of an unarmed girl...
